Hi'iaka's Healing Herb Garden : Newsletter index : 2002 News : Fall 02
Coming Soon...
Volume 4, Number 1 Fall 2002 Awesome Autumn Interns Renovate Tired Garden Beds Again, I have been blessed with wonderful young people who work in the Garden and provide lots of fun company. Beate Lindberg traveled from Stockholm, Sweden for her first visit to the US in September and was a joy to have for two weeks. In October, Brady Wilson, from Durango, Colorado, stayed for three weeks and made significant contributions by re-building some depleted garden beds and many other projects like setting up a new propagation table. Mahalo to both of you for your hard work and great spirits. Now, I'm hosting Nicole Tenenbaum from San Francisco, who's helping in the office and the Garden. Friends of the Garden Begin Joining Us As Charter Members I'm pleased to announce that several people have joined me as Charter Members of our newly-reorganized Limited Liability Company (LLC). Students will experience over 80 species of Hawaiian healing plants growing in Hi'iaka's Herb Garden, including endangered species. An integral part of the class will be harvesting plants and making remedies with Noni, Kava kava, Mamaki, Ko'oko'olau, Lau kahi, Ti, 'Olena and other Hawaiian plants. I combine traditional herbal practices such as tincturing with Hawaiian techniques, prayer, offerings, and chants for healing both physical and spiritual ailments. The cost is $300, which includes lodging at an oceanfront home within walking distance of the Garden, continental breakfasts, gourmet lunches and a full moon dinner. Please contact me for more details. An Interview With an Author For my December column in the Hawaii Island Journal, I interviewed Merri Lu Park, author of the book Menopause: Time For a Change. With the recent press about the dangers of hormone replacement therapy, I wanted to consult with an expert on the subject to get some facts clear in my own mind and communicate them to others. Here are some excerpts from that column. Barbara: How dangerous are the HRT drugs? Merri Lu: I am so convinced of their danger that I spent five years researching my book and have appeared on radio, TV and at women's wellness events for 10 years. In addition to the cancer-causing potential of Premarin, side effects of Provera include liver toxicity, thrombophlebitis (blood clot in the leg); pulmonary emobolism (blood clot in the lung); and stroke! There are many other side effects, including anxiety, water retention, resumption of periods, depression, PMS-like feelings, headaches and dizziness. Barbara: What should women who are taking HRT do? Merri Lu: I have known only a few women who were not able to find safe, effective replacements to ERT/HRT when they decided to wean themselves off these drugs. Each woman must decide for herself... I truly believe HRT should remain a very last consideration. Many women live half their lives beyond menopause. We must become more courageous and outspoken and take an active part in all medical decision-making processes, because they affect our lives and bodies, sometimes forever. Check out www.menopausetime.com. We've Begun Propagating Our Endangered Hawaiian Plants In November, with the help of fellow herbalist Kris Houser from Santa Cruz, we started rooting 15 cuttings of our endangered state flower, the Ma'o Hau Hele yellow hibiscus. It's an exciting development to be involved in the important new trend in Hawaii of using our native plants in home and commercial landscaping. We Made Our First Root Crop Harvest With Some Special Guests In October I was happy to host my seed suppliers Rolfe and Janet Hagen of the Thyme Garden in Oregon for two nights in the Ohana cottage. During their stay, we talked nonstop about herbs and the herb business, of course, but also harvested our first medicinal root crops, Valerian and Kava kava. Rolfe, Janet and daughter Emily had a great time here. I've made a limited bottling of tincture from our Kava, which is ready now at $7.50 for a 1-ounce bottle. |
