Learning Objectives and Schedule for “Live and Learn at the Garden”
Residency Internship


✓    Grow and identify dozens of medicinal plants in the garden, including native Hawaiian plants and endangered species.
✓    Identify and explain the significance of at least five invasive species.
✓    Build an abundant raised bed herb garden and plant selected plants.
✓    Make herbal teas, decoctions, liniments and poultices.
✓    Make a healing tincture and elixir with plants from the garden.
✓    Make a skin healing salve with Noni fruit.
✓    Make an herbal smoking blend with Kava and other dried herbs.
✓    Make an herbal oil with Hawaiian and other plants from the garden.
✓    Preserve plants by drying, freezing and other methods.
✓    Attain attunement of body, mind and spirit through herbal baths and plant spirits.

Schedule of Events:

Day 1: Arrive during the afternoon the day before your Internship begins. Get settled into your vacation home and come to the Garden for a welcome dinner.

Day 2: Morning: Introductory garden tour; pick herbs from garden and make herbal tea and a skin healing poultice. Classroom activity: "Properties and Preparations."
Afternoon garden activity: Working with the landscape.

Day 3: Morning: All about tinctures: harvest herbs and make a tincture and an elixir.
Afternoon garden activity: Compost is queen, including how to make good use of invasive plants.

Day 4: Enjoy a fun day exploring and having lunch in historic Hilo with your instructor.

Day 5: Morning: Herbal Skin Care with salves, liniments and oils. Learn that Noni needn’t taste nasty and make a healing salve with this wonderful fruit.
Afternoon garden activity: Seeds and cuttings.

Day 6: Morning: Gather plants from the garden for an herbal healing bath.
Afternoon: participate in herbal healing bath. Farewell dinner.

Day 7: Conclusion and wrap-up.
