Hi'iaka's Healing Herb Garden : Reunion

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA AT SANTA BARBARA, 1964-1968

What a time we had at this beautiful place!

Once upon a time, in another lifetime, five young men shared an apartment, and their lives...

Bob Halcomb                         Chris Kyte                            John Linngren                Jeff Cook                          Dennis Fox
Kimball, NB                             Pasadena                            St. Paul, MN                  Pomona                           Studio City
Electrical Engineering             Psychology                          History                         Anthro/History                    Political Science

Any Further College Degrees?

Chris: I got my masters in Psychology at Cal State LA and earned my Marriage, Family, and Child Counseling license. I worked for 13 years at Hathaway Home for Children, then 2 years at the Girls Clubs of Pasadena, then 20 years for Children and Family Services in Los Angeles and Orange Counties.

Dennis: I received my Juris Doctorate (JD) from Southwestern School of Law in Los Angeles in 1974.

John: University of Colorado, Master's in history and work towards that elusive doctorate. John wrote:

My next stop after UCSB was graduate school (history) at the University of Colorado, in Boulder.  It was a great place to be in the early 1970s, and academically I prospered--picked up a MA and most of a PhD, and then the motivation for the kind of life that led to evaporated.  I remember spending most of one summer down in the stacks at the Stanford graduate library, doing dissertation research, and thinking it was all just too dusty and stifling; I ended up spending a lot of time running back and forth from the stacks to the sun outside, and finally flipped the whole doctorate program off.  And what a taste of freedom that was! Schoolwise, however, I was not quite done. I spent the first two years here in Portland taking classes at Portland State University, stuff I wanted to take, and only for the pleasure in it.

WHAT ARE THEY DOING TODAY? (or what did they do in their careers)?

Bob: Donna and Bob have been married 37 years (!) and have 4 children and 4 grandchildren. Heidi will be 35 and lives in Ft Collins with her husband and 2 children.  She is a part time social worker at a nursing home. Jenny is 32, lives in Denver with her husband and two children and is an engineer. Patrick was born with CP and multiple special needs and lived to be 21.  John, whom we adopted at 4 months of age, is an actor, singer and dancer and has Down Syndrome.  He's 25 and has his own apartment in our house.

Bob is a mathematician and works at an Aerospace company in Denver. Donna is a retired teacher and a full time grandma. We have lived in Colorado most of the time with a few years in Wyoming and Wisconsin. We hike in the mountains a lot.

Chris: I retired a couple of years ago and am trying to survive on a fixed income.

John: Lives in Portland, Oregon and owns an Ace Hardware Store. Partners with Greg Breisleth; divorced, no kids. More from John here.

Jeff: I'm unmarried and have no children. After settling down in Arcata, San Luis Obispo, Santa Cruz, Berkeley, and Bishop, I now live in Eugene, Oregon. I've had a varied "career," and am now retired (tired yesterday, and tired again today). Jeff's story here.

Dennis: After four years as a prosecutor in LA, I moved to Pebble Beach and entered private practice. I was a certified specialist in Probate, Estate Planning and Trust Law for twenty-eight years. I have now retired from the practice of law and have two software companies. Fore! Trust Software develops and markets legal software (trust and related estate planning) to attorneys and document preparers through-out the US. LivingTrustsontheWeb.com is an on-line "do-it-yourself" Living Trust preparation site for end-users who wish to create their own living trust (along with all of the other documents). Lives in Pebble Beach, CA.

We had a classmate who became a famous movie star and producer, although we didn't know him.
MICHAEL DOUGLAS!!!
Funny picture, because he is made up to look old, so it looks much like he actually looks now.
(from page 46 of the 1968 La Cumbre yearbook)

Christopher Kyte's memories and some recent photos of his family

I remember living at Dos Pueblos Freshman year.  I ended up in a room by myself, smoking cheap cigars and trying to drink all the stale beer from our keg parties. I remember the friend who taught me how to drive stick shift and the drunk who roared down our street and crashed into a light pole after hitting several cars. I remember Adam Lewis who roomed with me at the beginning of Sophomore year and had to drop out because he got Mono, or some disease. I remember TwoFer Tuesdays in Isla Vista and playing pool at the pool hall. I remember buying a gallon of Red Mountain wine and a large bottle of Squirt and spending the morning at the beach. I remember the surfer with epilepsy who had a seizure and died. I remember teaching Bob’s step dad, Henry, how to body surf in Santa Barbara. I remember riding motorcycles with Jeffrey and Johnny the WOP and poor Johnny had to hold up his bike with me looming on the back. I remember that someone stole my ten speed and I went all over Isla Vista until I found it and cut off the lock and took it back. I remember taking Chemistry in an evening class and the teacher had large pendulous breasts and spoke in a quiet monotone that was guaranteed to put anyone to sleep. I remember the little Chinese restaurant in Santa Barbara that had really cheap hamburgers and the Dutch Lunch at the bar in Isla Vista. The bartender swore he lost money on each plate and only made up the difference in the volume. I remember being able to buy a case of bottled beer for $4.29 and you could make half of that back by bringing back the bottles. I think it was Dodger Lager beer. I remember the electric beer signs we had in our apartment, including the Hamms one with the rippling waterfall. I could go on for weeks, but I’ll stop for now.
