Hi'iaka's Healing Herb Garden : Newsletter index : 2000 News : Spring 00
Coming Soon...
Volume 1, Number 3 Spring, 2000 We Have a Garden Site Beginning March 22, a lot of people have worked very hard to clear and prepare the lower part of my acre for the large herb garden I have dreamed of since before I left California in November, 1998. Special thanks to my contractor, Jim Yazevac, who performed a miracle and coordinated all of the work and workers at such a fast pace it left me spinning. The above photos show the rough garden area, including the access road, two gazebos, and a scooped-out area for what will become a pond (in the center left next to the far gazebo). Now I am happily ordering seeds and coveting plants. The young plants I have been propagating and purchasing all these months will soon have proper places to live. I'm about to order the soil mixture that will fill the beds. An 8 x 10 foot screen/greenhouse sits near the entrance to the large garden area, so I have a place for lots of the plants that will go into the garden. Thanks to Eric Cohen for building this for me! The Garden Has Been Blessed On Sunday, April 9, a special Hawaiian man, Auli'i Mitchell, performed a fascinating ceremony in the pouring rain to bless Hi'iaka's Garden. As Auli'i told us: "The rain is a blessing and portends great success for the land being blessed." 20 people gathered under the "Hill House" gazebo (Hale Pu'u) and shared our ancestries with each other, then passed a gourd bowl (ipu) around the circle while each person spoke one word that the gourd gave to them and one word that they gave back to the gourd. It was emotional and everyone was a trooper in the wind and rain. I know it sounds funny to you folks in the Pacific Northwest and on the East Coast, but believe me, we were COLD! Check Out Our Updated Web Site Thanks to Mark Olson, a talented "web slave," in his terminology, Hi'iaka's web site just keeps getting better and better. We have added a page for links to other cool sites, and I have begun writing a garden journal, which will soon include photos of the progress in building and planting the garden. Watch for a more "Hawaiian" look and feel next. Workshop and Product Information With the garden building taking up all of my time and energy, I have put Hi'iaka's herbal products and workshops on the back burner for now, although they still exist! My products are currently in three stores, with the addition of the "Made on the Big Island" shop at the King Kamehameha Hotel in Kona soon to become a reality. I continue looking for partners to help make the products and generate sales, because I cannot do it all myself! Monthly local workshops are going well. I have started up the Puna Herb Co-op and have met many enthusiastic, motivated people who want to learn about and grow herbs. The market for such in-demand herbs as St. John's Wort is so great that I am attempting to educate local people about the strong market that exists. As enrollment occurs, we'll be holding the week-long workshops. I'm in the planning stage of working with a nearby Permaculture Farm to offer add-on herb workshops to their month-long intensive training. Till next time, aloha nui loa. |
