Hi'iaka's Healing Herb Garden : Newsletter index : 1999 News : Spring 99
Coming Soon...
Volume 1, Number 1 May/June, 1999 It's Been 6 Months! I thought it was about time to update you about what's going on in the life of Barb Fahs, my herb garden, and the four furry friends who made the flight over the Pacific ocean with me. So, I'm settled in and the animals (dogs Amber and Taffy and cats Bonsai and Clyde) seem to love it here. Just this morning, I found a small bird nest in my bedroom! I hope the former occupants are OK! I've started noticing, however, the large number of geckos around the property without tails... The herb garden is progressing slowly: I have many plants started and have bought even more young plants, especially Hawaiian natives, about which I am eagerly learning. About half of my acre is "undeveloped" as yet. Because the land is lava flow (read: rock with just a couple of inches of composted matter on top of it), I will need help (read: big strong men and perhaps a bulldozer) to turn it into the herbal mecca I envision. You must first build it up with raised beds and purchased soil, so it's a lot of work! My priorities so far have been getting the product line started, establishing some contacts for my writing, and planning and organizing workshops. Read on! Sales of Products: Going Well Hi'iaka's line of herbal products is becoming known in the Hilo area and is featured at two stores: Abundant Life Natural Foods in Hilo and Sistahs Artifactory in Pahoa (watch for the grand opening flyer soon). Both stores are also promoting my workshops, the first of which takes place June 16 at Abundant Life. It's simply called "Introduction to Herbs," and I'm very excited! I have added three new products since the brochure: Kava Pure Tincture (100% Fijian Kava kava root, 1 oz. $6.50); Kava-Pep Tea (Hamakua Coast Kava kava leaf with Peppermint: finally... a good-tasting Kava drink! 3/4 oz loose tea, $3.00); and Big Island Aloe Healing Lip Balm (1/2 oz., $2.00). Shipping is included on all orders. Writing: GardenGuides.com I'm extremely pleased to announce my association as a regular contributor with a "Webzine" called Garden Guides. Check out my first article, "You're a Budding Herbalist," published May 24, at www.gardenguides.com. My editor and I are discussing ideas for ongoing articles and photos about the development of my land and the planting of my gardens. They have been very supportive of my ideas and enthusiastic about my venture, so I'm hoping for a long and "fertile" relationship! Thanks, folks! Workshops: Becoming a Reality Much of the legwork is done for the workshops I am sponsoring with special partners: August 11-15: Healing with Yoga and Herbs, with Annalisa Cunningham. Check out Annalisa's book "Stretch and Surrender" at www.amazon.com. September 19-25: Essentials of Herbalism, with Kris Houser. Join two old friends for fun in the kitchen and garden, and make lots of goodies to take home. October 30-November 6: Teas, Tonics, and Tinctures, with Jeanine Pollak and Kathleen Brown, authors of the book "Herbal Teas" (www.storeybooks.com). December 29-31: Year 2000 Kava kava Intensive, with special guests from Fiji and the Big Island. Imagine ringing in the new millennium with 3 days of Kava ceremonies under Hawaiian skies, culminating in a massive fireworks display at the dawn of the Year 2000. Workshops include lodging at oceanfront vacation homes near Hi'iaka's Garden. You'll plant and harvest herbs from the garden and the wild, make products in the Herbalists' workshop, participate in a bonfire and Hawaiian naming ceremony with Kava kava, have time to snorkel, swim, shop, and relax.
