Hi'iaka's Healing Herb Garden : Newsletter index : 1999 News : Summer 99
Coming Soon...
It's Been Quite a Year It's been a full year since I left California for my new life in Hawaii. So much has happened and I am very greatful for the life that I now have. My new deck and kitchen remodel project went very smoothly and quickly in October and now I'm really set up for some serious cooking, entertaining, workshops, and herbal product making. I'd like to dedicate this newsletter issue to my dear mother, Betty Nelson Fahs, who passed away on July 29 after a short battle with a bad ulcer. Everyone who knew her misses her a lot. Aloha, Betty! First Large Order Delivered As I write this, about 40 top salespeople from Alza Pharmaceuticals are opening their Hi'iaka's Herb Garden herbal gift baskets at the Four Seasons Resort in Kona. Many thanks to my old friend Debbie Ahern for thinking of my fledgling company for this great opportunity! These baskets include three new products that I am making available: Hawaiian Enchantment Body Oil and Lotion in tropical scents and a lovely bar of soap made by a soap maker with whom I am partnering (watch for Bath Salts soon!). Also included are two of my teas (Mahalo Blend and Hilo Dreams) and my best-selling favorite, Big Island Aloe Herbal Lip Balm. News of the Garden Thanks to Kris Houser, I have acquired seeds from renowned herbalist Michael Tierra's garden and have successfully started Wood Betony, Skullcap, Astragalus, and Codonopsis. I've never grown any of these plants before, but they're doing well so far. My plans for ground breaking of the large demonstration/educational herb garden in the lower part of my acre are proceeding well. I hope to begin that project after the holidays. Then I'll have a place to plant all of the young plants I have been propagating and purchasing all these months. For now, I continue to purchase the herbs that I use in my products, but am finding more Hawaiian growers all the time. I just connected with a man growing world-class Echinacea Purpurea on Kauai and am looking forward to receiving my first order of precious FRESH root, which I will promptly make into a tincture that will replace my "Wellness" tincture. Any ideas for a new name? "Hawaiian Health"? I love feedback and suggestions! Workshops: Gearing Up For 2000 There's a lot on tap for the new Millennium. Lodging is no longer included, which brings the cost down to $250 for week-long workshops. We can refer you to great lodging nearby. Here are some examples of the workshops that we'll be holding in 2000:
