THE HEALING GARDEN SCHEDULE OF CLASSES
and Other Events

Lava Flow Gardening Series of Fall Classes

Given by Barbara Fahs at Hi‘iaka's Healing Herb Garden, Kea‘au, Hawai‘i
Classes run from 10 am until noon
$15 per person/$25 for two
Entire series: $80 per person; $130 for two

1. October 6: Let’s Get Started!
What kind of garden do you want?
How do you begin?
Work with the landscape instead of against it by letting your garden design itself.
Grow what grows best in your microclimate: greenhouses not needed!

2. October 20: Compost Is Queen
Different methods and wonderful worms—save money on fertilizer.
Is dirt really needed? Not that much: check out our 6 year-old orchard! (Raised beds ROCK)
Hack, whack and stack your pruned parts.

3. November 17: Invasive Plants Are Rampant
What to take out?
What to keep?
Tour of our invasives.
How do you control them? Vinegar and other spray-on solutions.
Hints and tips for easy weed control
Tools of the trade: hula hoe, good clippers, loppers, whacker. Chip/shred if you can.
Cardboard is next to Godliness
Naturalization of “wonderful weeds” makes your job super simple.

4. December 1: Seeds and Cuttings “How To.”
Preparing a potting mix
Starting seeds
Making cuttings
Transplanting

5. December 15: Raised Beds ROCK!
Build a raised bed and plant something!
What to do in a drought? Drip irrigation is the answer!

6. December 29: How About All Those Bugs?
Quick ID of common pests
Beneficial friends and plants that attract them
Why chemical pesticides do NOT really help (and kill the good guys)
Organic solutions (soap and oil sprays you can make)

No need to pre-pay. Series fee can be divided among the six workshops. However, we do appreciate pre-registration, as space is limited!
