Volume 3, Number 2                       Winter 2001/2002

Our Winter Intern and Upcoming Students Are a Great Benefit

Since February I've been fortunate to host Alyssa Remy-Powers, a delightful, hard-working young woman from Sterling College in Vermont. She is in her junior year at this small private alternative college, majoring in sustainable agriculture.

Alyssa and I agree that growing and making plant medicine is a vital part of sustainable living, and one that is often overlooked in other courses. She has built additional garden beds, planted numerous trees, helped me to problem-solve, and made some great dinners! I'll be saying good-bye to her soon, but she'll remain on the island for another three weeks, working and studying with a group of people nearby that is practicing a sustainable lifestyle on their 3-acre homestead. Mahalo for everything you've contributed, Alyssa!

Arriving in mid-April will be Maryann Mazzacaro, a kindergarten teacher on sabbatical from New York who admits to having no gardening experience! We'll try not to make her deal with too many gross things like bugs and chicken manure!

The month of May is open right now, so please spread the word that we have a vacancy. Or buy an airline ticket and come see the place for yourself. You don't have to be a student... just come hang out by the pool and see the exciting sights in this part of Hawaii.

From June 10 until July 19, we'll welcome Michelle Kuhrt, a pharmacy doctoral student from North Carolina. I truly feel that we're hosting the cream of the crop.
